Curriculum Information for Year 10

Note: If you are not sure who your learner's teacher is for certain subjects or what option subjects your learner is studying then please contact your learner's form tutor for more information.

English:
Year 10 English Language

Teachers:  GCSE classes - Mrs Margarita & Mr Sullivan, Functional Skills - Mr Battersby.

This term, learners will engage in coursework for the Cambridge IGCSE. They will begin by honing their descriptive writing skills, focusing on scenes such as a train station and a celebration. Following this, they will work on narrative writing, using images as inspiration to craft engaging stories. Additionally, students will practise for Language Paper 1, developing their comprehension and analysis skills.

Maths (Daniel Stephen):
This term starts with learners focusing on number work, including standard form and developing accuracy in calculations. Algebra then becomes a major focus, with learners solving simultaneous equations, quadratic equations, and exploring functions. Geometry and measures are further developed, with a focus on trigonometry, including solving problems involving right-angled triangles and non-right-angled triangles using the sine and cosine rules. Additionally, the term introduces learners to advanced statistics, including cumulative frequency, box plots, and histograms, helping them interpret and analyse real-world data effectively.

PSHE (David Watkins):
This term, learners will be focusing on topics such as emotional resilience, the impact of social media and fake news. We will also learn about how to manage conflict, what is a positive relationship and how to maintain them

PE (Mr Lee and Mr Green):
This term, learners will build their knowledge around invasion sports. They will be taking part in basketball, football, netball, benchball and handball. Within these sessions learners will develop their fundamental skills such as passing, moving, tactical awareness, shooting and throwing. These skills will be shown through tailored drills and match play with the aim of learners using these different skills and tactics to outwit their opponents.

Option Subjects.

Biology GCSE (Mrs Chagger):
This half term, we will learn about the topic of cell and control. This covers the areas of growth, the brain and nervous system and how the eye works. The topic of genetics and Inheritance follows which leads seamlessly into natural selection and the evidence for evolution.

Chemistry GCSE (Mrs McCran, Dr Allouis):
This term we will be learning about the structure of the atom and how we can use the periodic table to further this understanding. We will then investigate how a molecule's bonding and properties are linked and the different types of substances that exist.

Drama (Mrs Khairdean):
Within drama lessons this term, learners will take on a main part in this year's Christmas pantomime Alice in Wonderland. They will contribute to directorial ideas and production decisions as well as providing role model behaviour and showcase performance skills for the younger learners to aspire to.

Physics GCSE (Dr Allouis):
Conservation of energy and energy efficiency is learnt about during the beginning of this term, leading to an understanding in the production of energy and renewable and non-renewable resources. Investigations into waves and wave action, such as reflection and refraction are covered. Finally, we find out what infrasound and ultrasound are.

Entry Level Science (Mr Doza):
The autumn term begins with cells, genetics, inheritance and gene modification. This will be followed by atoms, compounds and states of matter.

History GCSE (Mr Miller):
In History this term, we will be looking at Anglo-Saxon England, the last years of Edward the Confessor and the Norman invasion of 1066. We will then examine how William secured power and how the Anglo-Saxons resisted their Norman conquerors.

Computer Science GCSE (Mr Arnold):
Having made excellent progress with learning to code using Python in year 9, this element is taking a less prominent role in this term’s work. We are instead looking at the makeup of computer systems, identifying different components and their impact on system performance; what it is that a computer actually does behind the scenes to turn electrical signals into useful work (or games!); and looking at some of the moral / ethical issues surrounding the use of computers.

Design Technology (Mrs Beck):
Product design - Learners begin with a mini project learning how to design a 2D net to create a 3D shape, in this case a letter from their name. They create a prototype before making the final piece and decorate it however they like. They will then move onto exploring designer Harry Beck who designed the London Tube Map. Learners will be tasked to redesign the Paultons Park theme park map, using the London Tube map as inspiration. Learners will explore the design process by researching, investigating, designing and creating prototypes of their ideas before designing and producing their own version of the map. Learners will be introduced to 2D Design Computer Aided Design software to assist with the design of their map.

BTEC Sport (Mr Lee):

Learners will be finishing their 6 week gym programme and reviewing the progress they made. Learners will then begin to learn about the cardiovascular system, musculoskeletal system and the different joints in the body. This will then finish their unit 3 assignment and we will be moving onto unit 2- Rules and regulations of sports. Learners will cover the different rules and regulations within sports and demonstrating skills in two selected sports and reviewing performance.

Art (Mrs Easton):
This term the learners will be developing their perspective drawing skills. They will learn how to draw a perspective room adding furniture and details of their choice but learning about the principals of lines leading to the vanishing point. Once their design is done they will then convert this into a 3D box and create miniature models of the furniture etc.

Food Technology:
This half term we will concentrate on making basic dishes including; jam tarts, sausage rolls, meatballs and spaghetti, pizza and muffins.  The learners will make these dishes from scratch and will make their own pastry and pizza bases. Next half-term we will be cooking independently, following a recipe, locating equipment and ingredients.
